The Mark I knew in early 1990s

The best way I know to capture something of the Mark I met, fell in love with and married in August 1992 is in some of the notes he wrote.  The Mark that I met was a full on evangelical Christian - he was full of passion for God AND life - a punk before he became a Christian, by picking up a bible on the streets of New York, and who never let the church dampen his essential Punk Spirit.  Mark had something of a pentecostal fire in his bones, he was very different to the bland, insipid, watered down, comfortable, lacking in substance culture that took over so much of the evangelical church. He loved Bukowski, Hip Hop, Gospel, Punk, Jonny Cash as The Man in Black, he loved street culture, he read a lot, was a larger than life, all or nothing character, and I loved him for it.  There was of course a deep painful shadow to Mark, one that the church could not help him to come to terms with.  We had no real wise elders or mentors to guide us back those giddy heady days of taking on the world for Jesus. It is painful to remember his unravelling as we left Ichthus in 1995/96 and all the subsequent mental health problems that ensued for him.  But for now I want to honour the 'some time to cry to our lover' spirit in Mark 'Blessed are the beggers for they get Heaven'.
